Chairman's Report 2010
14th April 2010
BPIC - CHAIRMAN'S REPORT 2010
I was very proud to take over as Chairman of BPIC from my predecessor Liam O'Reilly, for the 2009/10 season - a season which has seen Club Membership not only maintained, but strengthened. My thanks to Liam for passing on the reins of the Club in a healthy state! I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the smooth running of the Club again this year, in particular Russell Birch as Secretary, who ensures that everyone's details get into his infamous little black book; Billy Leahey as Treasurer who does such a fine job of looking after our finances and setting up the refreshments every Club night; John Humes as Vice-Chairman for his on-going support; Paul Hanley and Terry McCreesh for acting as joint NIPA reps; Steve Dickey for setting up and maintaining the new Club website; Ever-present members like Gerald Gribbon, Mark Lindsay and Paul Hanley for helping set-up club equipment and generally being very willing to provide a helping hand. Thank you to you all, for continuing to make the effort and commitment to attend each week and for taking an active role within the Club.
Thank you to everyone who ensured that BPIC's high standard of competitive photography was maintained in the NIPA Competitions. It was very pleasing that several members managed to obtain Starred Prints for photographs which were taken on Club Studio evenings.
We finished 3rd overall, improving from 4th last year, and won the Digital Images Section. The NIPA entries came from no less than 19 members, and there is evidence that our increasing female membership is at last emerging from under the proverbial bushel! Please ensure that during the Summer break you all continue to take plenty of photographs and have lots of RAW material for next season!
Billy Leahey and I attended the PAGB Print Championships at Connahs Quay in October, which was a very worthwhile exercise, even though the standard of competition was very high. BPIC scored very well in the Plate Competition, averaging 12.2/15 for 5 prints. If this standard could only be maintained over 15 prints, it would mean finishing in the top 8 Clubs! Thanks in particular to Paul Hanley and Tommy Dickson for very strong entries in the PAGB Competition.
The internal Club Competitions have still to be completed, and I urge you all to enter Prints in the 3rd Round entitled 'Red' on 6 May. The prizes for these competitions (amongst others) will be awarded at a Club Dinner on 20th May at a venue still to be decided. It is hoped to continue and improve the internal competition again next year, so that hopefully it will grow in popularity and become a regular and important part of the Club Programme.
Other matters of note:-
The Club Exhibition at Belfast City Hospital was again a success, with significant numbers viewing the prints on show.
The Club won a Canon printer worth £500 from Digital Photography User Magazine with 3 photos from Paul Hanley, Leslie McCutcheon and myself.
Andy Lyle got placed in the NIPA beginners Competition.
Paul Hanley and myself had prints accepted for the NIPA Annual Exhibition.
We hopefully provided a varied programme which appealed to 'most of you most of the time.' It is hard to please everyone all the time, but we do try our best! A huge thanks to the Club members who made individual presentations on Club evenings - these take a fair amount of preparation, and are an essential part of sharing knowledge and expertise. Highlights for me, were the visits of Stanley Matchett, Richard Mills and Andy McInroy as guest speakers, as well as the studio nights including the presentation by Jim Crone.
